In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has upheld the Karnataka High Court's decision to grant bail to Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and others accused in the Renukaswamy murder case. The verdict, delivered on January 24, 2025, rejected the Karnataka government's plea to cancel the bail order but agreed to review their challenge against it.

Supreme Court’s Stand on Darshan Thoogudeepa 's Case

The hearing, led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala, concluded that canceling bail at this stage would be inappropriate. While issuing a notice to Darshan and his co-accused, including Pavithra Gowda, the court assured the Karnataka government that their concerns would be addressed during the appeal review.

The state government, represented by senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, argued that the High Court's order had effectively "whitewashed" the allegations against the accused. They emphasized that the bail order could influence future cases involving similar charges. The Supreme Court clarified that the current order would not set a precedent and that any future bail applications by co-accused individuals would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Background of the Case

Darshan Thoogudeepa was arrested on June 11, 2024, following allegations of his involvement in the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy. Reports suggest that the victim made derogatory remarks about Pavithra Gowda, who was allegedly in a relationship with Darshan, and accused her of causing trouble in his marriage. These comments allegedly led to a violent altercation, resulting in Renukaswamy's death. His body was discovered shortly after the attack.

Current Implications

The Supreme Court’s refusal to revoke bail allows Darshan and the others involved to remain out of custody while the legal proceedings continue. However, the case highlights concerns over potential judicial influence in sensitive matters and the growing scrutiny of celebrity involvement in criminal cases.
