Did you know the reason for 'X' behind every last coach? Indian Railway clears up the mystery

<p>Almost everyone of us who travels via Indian Railways would be having the same question since ages&#8230;. Why does every Indian Railway train&#8217;s last coach has &#8216;X&#8217;? Didi you thought this mystery is unexplainable?  Finally this mystery is being solved by the Indian Railways.To clear up any potential misconception about this curious X sign seen typically at the back of a train coach, it’s advisable to cross-check what you’re told with official government sources — in this case the Ministry of Railways, whose tweet has put the questions to bed for good. Almost everyone of us who travels via Indian Railways would be having the same question since ages…. Why does every Indian Railway train’s last coach has ‘X’? Didi you thought this mystery is unexplainable?  Finally this mystery is being solved by the Indian Railways.

To clear up any potential misconception about this curious X sign seen typically at the back of a train coach, it’s advisable to cross-check what you’re told with official government sources — in this case the Ministry of Railways, whose tweet has put the questions to bed for good. Answering the same, Indian railway tweeted the same :


“The letter X denotes that it is the train’s last coach. Railway officials get a [sic] confirmation that the train has passed in its entirety without any coaches being left behind,” the ministry explained in a Twitter post.
According to Rail Mantra, a red tail lamp (last vehicle indicator) that remains unlit throughout the day under normal conditions, will light up at night to serve the purpose of the radium-painted white cross, its diurnal counterpart.
