Harvard sues Trump administration over efforts to ‘gain control of academic decision

Harvard University has filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump's administration over repeated threats to stop funding of more than US $ 2.2 billion. According to the New York Times report, University President Alan M. Garber accused the Trump administration of trying to establish undue control and said that this action of the government would have serious and long-term consequences.

The lawsuit filed in the federal court of Massachusetts accuses the Trump administration of launching a comprehensive attack to gain control over decision-making related to education at Harvard.

'Government wants control over decisions related to education'

Donald Trump had alleged that Harvard has become a place of fools and haters. This university is said to be a stronghold of leftists. On October 23, 2023, there were massive protests at Harvard against Israeli attacks and repression on Gaza. Trump says that this university is spreading anti-Semitism and has a soft corner for Muslims.

He also alleged that the university does not make admissions on the basis of merit. Therefore, he has threatened to stop funding Harvard.

Trump administration stops funding, 

Garber said in his statement, 'As a Jew and an American, I know very well that concerns about growing anti-Semitism are legitimate.' He said that the government should engage legally with the university and not control who we appoint and what we teach.

The lawsuit filed in the federal court of Massachusetts accuses the Trump administration of launching a comprehensive attack to gain 'control over educational decisions' at Harvard.

According to the New York Times report, it also mentions other major universities that have faced sudden funding cuts.

Trump administration has put forward these demands before Harvard

The Trump administration has threatened to stop more than $2.2 billion of its funding and grants if Harvard University refuses to accept its demands. These demands include ending diversity, equity and inclusion programs, banning the wearing of masks in protests on campus, implementing reforms such as merit-based recruitment and admissions, and reducing the power of faculty and administrators, whom the White House says are more committed to activism than scholarship.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Harvard could also be stopped from getting $1 billion in federal health research contracts. Earlier, Donald Trump criticized Harvard University, calling its recruitment process 'woke' and 'radical left'. He called the institute a joke and said that Harvard University should not be included in any list of the world's great educational institutions. Harvard is a 388-year-old university in the US.

Harvard University history

Harvard University was established in 1636 through a law in the American state of Massachusetts. Initially, it was named 'New College' or 'The College of New Town', whose main purpose was to educate priests. In the year 1638, Puritan pastor John Harvard donated 400 books from his library and an amount of 779 dollars to this institute. In his honor, this institute was named Harvard College in 1639. In the year 1642, the study of other subjects started in it with 9 students.
