India-Myanmar Relation: 283 Indians sent to Myanmar for illegal jobs were rescued

India-Myanmar Relation: 283 Indian citizens trapped in Myanmar have been rescued and brought back to India who were forced to commit cybercrime by luring them with lucrative jobs. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that the Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand, in coordination with the local authorities, have ensured the safe return of Indian citizens on Monday through an Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft from Mae Sot, Thailand.

The ministry said that India is continuously making efforts for the release and repatriation of its citizens who were taken to various South-East Asian countries including Myanmar by making fake offers of lucrative jobs.

283 Indians trapped in Myanmar

He said, "These people were later forced to engage in cybercrime and other fraudulent activities in scam centers operating in areas bordering Myanmar-Thailand." 6 more Indian nationals trapped in scam premises in Myawaddy reached the local police station on Monday to be sent back to India.

So far 101 Indians have been sent back to India since July 2024. The Indian Embassy in Myanmar said on X that we reiterate our advice against offering jobs in the region without consulting the mission.

Ministry of External Affairs said

China's concern over telecom fraud incident in Thailand-Myanmar border area Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Qian said on Friday that President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Li Qiang and NPC Chairman Zhao Lechi separately held talks with Thai Prime Minister Patongtorn Shinawatra, one of the issues included cracking down on internet gambling and telecom fraud.

The spokesperson said that the serious internet gambling and telecom fraud incidents that have occurred in the Thailand-Myanmar border area at present have caused harm to the safety of lives and property of the citizens of the relevant countries including China and Thailand and affected the normal movement and cooperation of countries in the region.

Summary

China is actively working with countries like Thailand, Myanmar and other countries to eliminate internet gambling and telecom fraud through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
