Significance  of Karwa Chauth

Actually, not one but four folk tales related to Karwa Chauth are prevalent, which show how old the tradition of this fast is. The first story is mythological and is related to the Mahabharata period.

1 story of Karva Chauth

While this story of Karwa Chauth was narrated by Lord Krishna to Draupadi. Saying that this story was narrated by Lord Shiva to Goddess Parvati, in which a Brahmin's daughter had seven brothers. The daughter comes to her maternal home and keeps the fast of Karva Chauth. But seeing their sister hungry and thirsty, the brothers get upset. And together they show the sister an artificial moon.

The woman eats food after seeing the artificial moon, after which her husband dies. The woman laments. Just then Queen Indrani is passing from there. She tells the girl that you broke the fast without seeing the moon.

Now when Chauth comes, you will have to keep the fast again. The woman kept the fast again and she became a fortunate woman. After listening to the story from Shri Krishna, Draupadi also kept this fast for Arjun's safety.

2 story of Karva Chauth

Woman named Karva keeps the fast of Karva Chauth in her maternal home. The brothers get upset seeing their beloved sister hungry and thirsty. The younger brother gets so upset that he lights a lamp on the Peepal tree and puts it in a sieve and tells his sister that the moon has risen. Have your meal after seeing it. After seeing the moon, as soon as she takes the first bite of food in her mouth, she sneezes. When she takes the second bite, a hair comes in her mouth and on taking the third bite, she gets the news of her husband's death.

Then her sister-in-law tells her that this has happened because she broke her fast. After this, the woman decides not to perform the last rites of her husband. And she vows to revive him with her chastity. After a year, Karva Chauth comes again. All her sisters-in-law observe a fast. When the sisters-in-law come to seek her blessings, she requests them to make her a married woman like her. The younger sister-in-law softens and puts Amrit in her dead husband's mouth with her little finger. Finally, Karva gets her husband back.

3 story of Karva Chauth

Veervati, the married daughter of Shakprasthpur Veddharma Brahmin, had observed the fast of Karva Chauth. As per the rules, she had to eat after moonrise, but she was unable to bear the hunger. Due to her anxiety, her brothers made her eat by lighting up fireworks under a Peepal tree and showing her the moonrise. As a result, her husband became invisible. Then Veervati observed fast on the Chaturthi of the entire 12 months and on the day of Karva Chauth.

According to the Puranas, a devoted washerwoman named Karva lived with her husband on the banks of Tungabhadra river. Her washerman husband was old and weak. One day he was washing clothes on the river bank. Then a crocodile preys on him. Then he calls his wife by saying Karva Karva. Karva comes and immediately ties the crocodile with a raw thread and takes it to the gates of Yamlok and prays to Yamraj to save her husband's life.

She says punish the crocodile and send him to Yamlok. Save my husband. Yamraj says the crocodile still has some life left.

Then Karva talks about cursing Yamraj. Yamraj gets scared seeing her courage. And sends the crocodile to Yampuri and Karva's husband gets the boon of long life.
