TTD Defends Land Exchange Amid Scam Allegations
The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has come under scrutiny after a land swap deal with the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Authority (APTA). Former TTD chairperson Bhumana Karunakar Reddy has alleged that this deal is a “scam” that could result in huge financial losses for the temple trust.

Disputed Land Exchange
At the core of the issue is a swap of two plots: a prime 25-acre TTD parcel within Tirupati’s urban limits for a 24.68-acre rural land in Peruru village owned by APTA. Reddy claims this exchange favors private interests rather than protecting temple property.
Oberoi Group Link
The controversy is tied to an earlier decision in November 2021, when the YSRCP government allotted 20 acres at Alipiri to the Oberoi Group for a luxury hotel. Devotees and Hindu groups strongly opposed this, citing the sacred nature of the land.
Project Cancellation
After coming to power, the Chandrababu Naidu-led government cancelled the hotel project in March 2025, addressing the concerns of devotees. Following this, the TTD passed multiple resolutions, including one in November 2024, urging the government to hand over the disputed land back to the temple board.
TTD Defends Move
In May 2025, the TTD board approved the land swap, which was finalised in July 2025. Responding to the allegations, the temple board has stated that the exchange is essential for safeguarding Tirumala’s sanctity. The land received from APTA is located near the Tirumala hills and will be used for future facilities for devotees.
Political Angle
The TTD has dismissed the accusations as politically motivated and stressed that the swap ensures proper use of the sacred land. They argue that the exchanged land is more suitable for temple-related facilities, while the land given to APTA already contains existing constructions.
