Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar tendered his resignation from the Bihar Legislative Council today. Alongside Nitish, BJP National President Nitin Naveen also resigned from his membership in the Legislative Assembly. Both leaders will now embark on a new chapter of their political careers in the Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, just prior to the resignations, activity at the Chief Minister's residence intensified on Sunday evening.

In fact, following their election to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2026, it was a foregone conclusion that both these leaders would move to the Upper House of Parliament.

Nitish Kumar Resigns from Bihar Legislative Council

Constitutionally, an individual is permitted to hold membership in two legislative houses simultaneously for a maximum period of 14 days. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Nitin Naveen were elected as members of the Rajya Sabha on March 16. Consequently, they were required to resign from one of the houses by March 30—that is, today. It is reported that Nitish Kumar's move to the Rajya Sabha holds particular significance. Indeed, upon entering the Rajya Sabha, Nitish Kumar will join an elite group of leaders who have had the distinction of representing all four legislative bodies: the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, the Legislative Assembly, and the Legislative Council. Furthermore, just before the resignations were submitted, senior leaders of the JD(U) met with the Chief Minister.

Prominent leaders such as Union Minister Lalan Singh, Working President Sanjay Kumar Jha, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, and Ashok Chaudhary were present at this meeting. Future strategies were discussed at the Chief Minister's residence.

Nitish Kumar's (Su-shasan Babu) Political Career

Nitish Kumar began his political career in 1985, when he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the first time from Harnaut (Nalanda). In 1989, he entered the Lok Sabha for the first time, representing the Baarh constituency (Patna). At the Centre, Nitish Kumar held key ministerial portfolios—including those of Railway Minister, Agriculture Minister, and Surface Transport Minister—during which tenure he implemented extensive reforms within the railway sector. Since 2005, he has been at the helm of the state of Bihar, serving as its Chief Minister. Over the years, Nitish Kumar has carved out a distinct identity for himself as 'Su-shasan Babu' (The Man of Good Governance).

Nitin Nabin Gets Emotional After Resigning from the Legislative Assembly

Nitin Nabin appeared visibly emotional following his resignation from the Legislative Assembly seat of Bankipur. Through a post on his social media handle, 'X', he shared details regarding his deep bond with Bankipur and the commencement of his new innings in the Rajya Sabha. Writing on 'X', Nitin Nabin stated: "To all my family members and fellow party workers in Bankipur and Bihar—in January 2006, following the sudden demise of my father, the party gave me the opportunity to contest a by-election from Patna West. On April 27, 2006, having been elected from the Patna West constituency for the first time, I embarked upon my journey in social and political life.

Over the past 20 years, I have made a ceaseless effort to nurture, refine, and propel forward on the path of development this constituency—a legacy built by my late father, Naveen Kishore Prasad Sinha—treating it with the care and affection of a family. Now, through the new role that the party has once again entrusted to me, I shall remain ever-ready and steadfastly committed to the development of my constituency and the state of Bihar."
