Update: 2024-08-07 12:33 GMT
In a major blow to the Indian Olympic team, Vinesh Phogat, who had achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the gold medal bout in the 50kg category, was disqualified for being overweight during Wednesday's weigh-ins. Despite her remarkable performances on Tuesday, Vinesh will now return home without a medal, missing out on a guaranteed silver.

Reaction from IOA Chief

PT Usha, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) chief, expressed her shock and disappointment over the disqualification. Currently in Paris, Usha confirmed that the IOA has filed an appeal with United World Wrestling (UWW), the global wrestling governing body, in an attempt to overturn the decision. In a video message, Usha stated, “Vinesh's disqualification is very shocking. I met her at the Olympic village polyclinic and assured her of the full support of the Indian Olympic Association, the Government of India, and the entire nation. We are providing her with all necessary medical and emotional support."

Efforts to Meet Weight Requirements

Dr. Dinshaw Paudiwala, the Indian Olympic team's doctor, explained the extreme measures taken to help Vinesh meet the weight requirements. Despite these efforts, including cutting Vinesh’s hair and other drastic steps, her weight was still found to be 100 grams over the 50kg limit. “Vinesh’s nutritionist mentioned that she usually gains 1.5 kg during the day, which helps her energy levels. After three bouts, to prevent dehydration, some water was given, leading to rebound weight gain. Despite employing our usual weight-cutting procedures, her weight remained over the limit,” Paudiwala explained.

Medical Check and Support

Following the disqualification, Vinesh underwent a series of tests to ensure her health and safety. She was given intravenous fluids to prevent dehydration and had her blood tested to confirm normal vitals. Paudiwala added, “Vinesh’s parameters were normal during the weight cut process, and she interacted with IOA president PT Usha, expressing her disappointment as this was her third Olympics.” Also read:
