Plants are essential for enhancing the beauty of a home and purifying the air. Nowadays, people are planting plants not only on their balconies or terraces, but also indoors, which add a positive vibe to the home and provide oxygen. This is why several plant growing techniques are going viral, one of which is "Kokedama," a Japanese technique. This technique is considered very effective for growing indoor plants. It requires neither pots nor excessive watering. For urban homes, plants grown using Kokedama are ideal. At the recent Basant Utsav (Flower Festival) in Noida, also known as the "Flower Festival," a method for making "Kokedama" was also demonstrated.

Today, we're going to share a Japanese technique for growing indoor plants, which allows you to grow healthy plants with minimal effort and less water.

This festival is held annually in Noida. Over 600 varieties of flowers are on display, and many plant care societies, farmers, and nurseries showcase their plants and share innovative methods of growing plants. TV9 Bharatvarsh spoke exclusively with a member of a Floriculture Society at the event. She explained how to make kokedama and its benefits. We also learned which plants can be grown using the kokedama technique.

What is the kokedama technique?

In kokedama, plants do not require pots or soil. This is a Japanese method that is gaining popularity. The roots of the plant are wrapped in a ball of soil and moss, which retains moisture for a long time. This technique uses very little water and still maintains healthy plants. This method is especially useful for those living in cities, where space is limited and it becomes difficult to water the plants daily. Most importantly, kokedama is also eco-friendly. It doesn't require plastic pots, so water is not wasted, and plants thrive with minimal resources.

How does kokedama work?

In kokedama, the plant's roots are protected within a round ball of soil. This soil ball is wrapped in moss or coconut fiber, which retains moisture for a long time. The plant is watered by soaking as needed (soaking method), so the roots absorb only the required amount of water, while preventing excess water from spilling out.

Can you make kokedama at home?

Geeta Agarwal, a member of the Floriculture Society, has also explained how to make kokedama. To make it, first, get a small indoor plant from a nursery. Remove all the soil from its roots. Now, take 30 percent potting soil, 30 percent compost, and 25 percent cocopeat. Mix all these ingredients and form a ball. Make it into a very tight ball so it doesn't break. Divide this ball into two parts and place a plant in the middle. Then, shape it into a ball again. Take moss grass and soak it for 2-3 hours. After this, drain all the water and wrap it around the ball. Then, tie the ball completely with thick thread or thin rope.

Which plants are best for KOKEDAMA?

Indoor plants should be chosen for kokedama. You can also choose money plants, ferns, spider plants, peace lilies, and Erica palms. These small, indoor plants help KOKEDAMA look beautiful, enhancing the beauty of your home and improving the environment.
