The festival marks the conclusion of Chaitra Navratri, which begins on Shukla Pratipada. It commemorates the birth of Lord Rama in Ayodhya as the eldest son of King Dashrath and Mata Kaushalya.

Devotees observe the day with prayers and rituals, recognising Lord Rama as Maryada Purushottam, symbolising truth, morality and justice. He is believed to have incarnated during the Treta Yuga.
