NASA Astronaut Death: Jim Lovell, who served America's astronauts and the American space agency NASA for years, died at the age of 97. The most special thing about Jim Lovell's career is that he was a part of Mission Apollo 13, one of the most special space missions of America and the world. Lovell handled the difficult challenges of that mission so wisely that it became a very historic event in the world's space mission history. The Apollo 13 mission was launched on April 11, 1970. This mission was for 10 days but due to the failure of the Service Module cryogenic oxygen system, he had to end his mission before landing on the surface of the moon. He worked as a group vice president at Centel Corporation. He then retired as an executive vice president. In 1967, US President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Lovell as an advisor for physical fitness and sports. In 1970, during President Nixon's tenure, he was made the chairman of the Physical Fitness Council, a position he held until 1978. In 1994, he wrote a book called Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13. In 1995, a film was made based on this book written by him, called Apollo 13. NASA also named a crater on the moon in his honor.
