Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Hits Major Milestone: 3 Crore Rural Houses Completed
Government says 3 crore rural houses completed under PMAY G, with target raised to 4.95 crore by 2029.
The Centre has said that nearly 3 crore rural houses have been completed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin, marking a major milestone in the programme.
According to the government, the scheme has helped provide permanent housing to millions of families and contributed to rural development.
Scheme progress
The first and second phases of the scheme targeted the construction of 41.5 million houses. Of these, 39.0 million houses have been approved and around 29.9 million have been completed.
The government said more than ₹4 lakh crore has been released so far to support construction under the scheme.
It added that the target has now been increased, with plans to build a total of 49.5 million houses by 2029.
Use of technology
The government said modern technology is being used to improve transparency and monitoring. Geo tagging of houses is being used to track construction at every stage.
It said artificial intelligence and machine learning tools are being deployed to verify the quality of houses. These tools identify structural elements such as walls, roofs, doors, and windows to ensure completion before approval.
Aadhaar based face authentication is also being used to ensure that benefits reach eligible beneficiaries.
Linkages with other schemes
The government has linked the housing scheme with other programmes such as the Swachh Bharat Mission, Jal Jeevan Mission, and the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.
These linkages aim to provide additional facilities such as sanitation, water supply, and electricity to beneficiaries.
The government said the scheme has shown consistent performance over the past decade, with technology helping improve transparency and reduce the scope for irregularities.
