TN CM Stalin wrote to MEA regarding regular arrest of Indian Fishermen by Sri Lanka
Expressing deep worry about a troubling pattern of Indian fishermen arrests, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has called on the Centre to address the situation through diplomatic means. In a letter to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Stalin highlighted the recent arrest of six fishermen from Ramanathapuram district by the Sri Lankan Navy along with two fishing boats on January 22. Stalin emphasized the concerning trend of Tamil fishermen detentions by Sri Lankan authorities, stressing the need for urgent attention. He pointed out that these arrests not only infringe upon the traditional fishing rights of the Tamil community but also contribute to a sense of fear and uncertainty among the fishing population. The Chief Minister stated that such actions jeopardize the cultural and economic foundations of Tamil fishing communities. To tackle these issues, he suggested the revival of the Joint Working Group between India and Sri Lanka, specifically focused on fisheries-related matters, as a constructive platform for dialogue.
