February-like Chill in April: Cool Weather in Delhi-NCR, Snowfall in Uttarakhand and Himachal
With the activation of a Western Disturbance, a distinct chill is being felt across North India, including Delhi-NCR.
February-like Chill in April: While the month of April typically marks the time when summer heat begins to intensify, the weather has taken a complete turn this year. The active Western Disturbance has brought back a cool spell to all of North India, including Delhi-NCR. The conditions are such that people are experiencing a chill reminiscent of February; overcast skies, strong winds, and intermittent rain have rendered the weather quite pleasant.
Overcast skies, strong winds, and intermittent rainfall throughout the day have made the weather delightful.
Cool Weather in Delhi-NCR
In Delhi-NCR, skies remained overcast throughout the day on Wednesday, with light rain and scattered showers accompanied by thunder and lightning occurring in several areas. According to the Meteorological Department, light rain is possible again this evening and night. However, the influence of the Western Disturbance is expected to begin subsiding after Thursday, following which a rapid rise in temperatures will be observed. Over the next 5–6 days, the mercury could climb by approximately 5 to 6 degrees, indicating that this cool spell will not last much longer.
Snowfall also continues in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, leading to a drop in temperatures.
Meanwhile, the weather in Uttarakhand has also taken people by surprise. The spell of rain and snowfall, which began on April 7, is still ongoing. Dehradun is experiencing continuous rainfall, while high-altitude regions—including Yamunotri Dham—are witnessing snowfall. Areas such as Tehri, Pauri, and Pithoragarh have also seen an increase in cold due to rainfall throughout the day. The Meteorological Department states that these weather conditions may persist for some time longer.
Activation of a Western Disturbance
At Badrinath Dham, following a period of continuous snowfall—and now that the weather has offered a brief respite—nature has adorned the entire landscape in a pristine white mantle. Snowfall persisted throughout the day yesterday at Badrinath Dham, leaving the entire shrine complex wrapped in a pristine white sheet of snow. From the temple of Lord Badri Vishal to the entire town of Badrinath Puri, the region currently appears wrapped in a pristine white blanket of snow.
The situation is much the same in Himachal Pradesh. High-altitude areas of Kullu-Manali and Lahaul-Spiti are experiencing continuous snowfall, while heavy rains in the lower regions have caused temperatures to plummet. Fresh snowfall at popular tourist destinations—such as Manali, Rohtang Pass, the Atal Tunnel, Kufri, and Narkanda—has draped the entire landscape in a white mantle.
Such cold weather and snowfall in April have taken people by surprise; however, for tourists, this comes as nothing short of a bonus. Large numbers of visitors are flocking to Manali amidst the falling snow to revel in the delightful weather. Meanwhile, local tourism stakeholders are also hopeful that this will lead to a successful season.
Summary
However, the Meteorological Department has clarified that this spell of cold weather will not last for long. As soon as the Western Disturbance recedes, summer conditions will return, and temperatures are expected to rise rapidly. In other words, make the most of this "cool" weather while it lasts, as the summer heat is soon set to make its intense presence felt once again.
