Big Attack on Iran: The ongoing tension between Israel and Iran has now reached an extremely dangerous juncture. Reports indicate that on Monday, Israel once again launched a major attack on Iran's largest gas facility, the South Pars plant.

Following that incident, President Trump issued a statement asserting that Iran's energy infrastructure—specifically the South Pars plant—would no longer be targeted.

In fact, this Israeli strike comes as something of a blow to U.S. President Donald Trump as well, given that he has been claiming to be pursuing a reconciliation with Iran. Moreover, as noted earlier, Israel had targeted this very same gas plant just last month—in March. That attack had prompted Trump to declare that Iran's energy infrastructure—particularly the South Pars plant—would henceforth be off-limits for strikes.

However, Israel has now targeted Iran's largest gas plant once again. Is the United States unaware of this Israeli attack, or is this strike part of a larger conspiracy?

Blow to Iran's Economy

Indeed, South Pars constitutes Iran's most extensive gas infrastructure; for Iran, it is akin to a gold mine. Approximately 70% of Iran's gas supply originates from this facility. An attack on this plant implies that the electricity powering Iranian households, the factories driving its industry, and its primary source of national revenue are all now in jeopardy. In essence, Israel has launched a direct assault on Iran's economy. Furthermore, the 'South Pars' facility is situated in close proximity to the Strait of Hormuz; consequently, a crisis now looms over the Hormuz shipping route as well.

The primary objective of this attack is believed to be the crippling of Iran's energy production capacity and the breaking of its economic backbone. According to preliminary reports, the refinery and pipeline network have sustained extensive damage.

It is worth noting that 'South Pars' is the world's largest natural gas field, situated within the Persian Gulf. More than 70% of Iran's total gas supply originates from this single field. Electricity for Iranian households, heating, and heavy industries—such as petrochemicals and steel—are entirely dependent on this gas. Following this attack, Iran could face severe power shortages, and industrial production could come to a grinding halt. Experts believe that repairing this critical infrastructure could take months or even years, potentially further deteriorating Iran's already fragile financial situation.

Fears of Rising Global Inflation

An attack on Iran's gas infrastructure could trigger a surge in global gas prices. Moreover, the South Pars region lies along a major maritime trade route; consequently, should a conflict erupt in this area, the cost of petrol, diesel, and cooking gas could skyrocket worldwide—including in India.

Why Did Israel Do This?

Israel's rationale behind this attack is that the revenue Iran generates from selling its gas is used to fund groups fighting against Israel—such as Hezbollah and Hamas. Israel's objective is to cut off the financial lifeline that sustains Iran's war efforts.

Will Iran Retaliate?

For its part, Iran has warned that it will not remain passive if its oil or gas facilities are attacked again. Following this strike, there are now fears that both nations could launch direct missile attacks against one another, potentially escalating the conflict in the entire Middle East into a full-blown war. Neighboring nations—such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar—could also be swept up in this escalating tension, given their proximity to the region.

Summary

This attack is being viewed as a retaliatory strike by Israel in response to recent drone and missile attacks launched by Iran; Israeli defense officials argue that targeting Iran's economic resources is an effective strategy to prevent it from sustaining future military operations. Meanwhile, diplomatic experts believe that the situation may now spiral out of control; while efforts for peace talks were underway on one front, this attack has all but closed the avenues for dialogue.
