Explosions were heard in Abu Dhabi and Doha hours after Israel and the United States carried out joint attacks on Iran, escalating tensions in the Middle East.

It was not immediately clear whether US air bases in Abu Dhabi and Doha were targeted.

In Abu Dhabi, the UAE Air Force and the US Air Force share the Al Dhafra Air Base. The UAE had earlier closed its airspace "temporarily and partially" as an exceptional precautionary measure.

In Doha, the Al Udeid Air Base serves as the forward headquarters of US Central Command.
