When did they return to Earth
NASA Crew-9 astronauts Sunita Williams, Nick Hague, Butch Wilmore and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov breathed earth's air for the first time in more than 9 months on Wednesday morning after the successful splashdown of SpaceX's Dragon capsule. The astronauts were taken out of the capsule on stretchers.
When the spacecraft entered the Earth's atmosphere, its temperature had risen to more than 1650 degrees Celsius. During this time, communication also went black for a while. It took about 17 hours from the separation of the Dragon capsule to landing in the Florida sea.
Mission was of 8 days
Sunita Williams started her journey to the space station on 5 June 2024 with astronaut Butch Wilmore. This journey was only for 8 days, but due to a technical fault in the Starliner, this mission became 8 to 9 months. Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore had to stay on the ISS for 9 months.
Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore spent 286 days on the International Space Station, where they completed more than 4500 orbits and traveled more than 121 million miles.
This mission was Sunita Williams' third flight into space. With the completion of this mission, Williams has completed 608 days in space, which is the second highest number of days for any American astronaut after Peggy Whitson's 675 days.
