What is Project Suncatcher:  AI companies around the world are working on their own data centers. Some are building data centers on Earth or underwater. Google is taking a step forward in this direction. Now, Google is going to build an AI computing system in space, which could also be used as a data center. Google has conducted a successful test, and CEO Sundar Pichai shared the information in a post.

Google will build a data center in space

Sundar Pichai stated that Google conducted a successful test while observing the radiation conditions found in low Earth orbit. It tested trillion-generation Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). This is a major success for Project SunCatcher. With this project, Google aims to fulfill one of its most ambitious plans. The company intends to deploy an AI computing system in space, powered by sunlight.

What is a TPU?

Google CEO Sundar Pichai explained that TPUs are specialized chips designed to improve the performance of artificial intelligence (AI). These chips were tested under radiation exposure, and no signs of damage were found.

Test for Project Suncatcher has been completed

Successful testing provides positive signs that Google's advanced hardware systems can withstand the dangerous environment of outer space. It should be noted that outer space has high radiation and rapidly changing temperatures. The aim of this project is to convert energy from the sun into power. Solar power panels can be used for this purpose. This power will be transferred to a large-scale AI computer system installed in low Earth orbit.

Where did the inspiration come from?

Google's inspiration for this project came from the Moonshot project, now known as Alphabet's X division. This division's job is to develop unique technologies that are beyond most people's imagination. Deadline given is 2027

Sundar Pichai stated that if all goes well, Planet will launch two prototype satellites in collaboration with the company by early 2027. After this, the project will be taken forward.
