Who Is Jayan Sivanandan Nair? Ex-Soldier Arrested In Thane Shooting Case

A 51-year-old man, Jayan Sivanandan Nair, was arrested after a shooting in Thane’s Mumbra area that left one dead and two injured.

A 51-year-old man identified as Jayan Sivanandan Nair has been arrested for allegedly opening fire on a group of youths in Mumbra, Thane, resulting in one death and two injuries, police said.

According to senior police inspector Anil Shinde, Jayan stated that he had procured the gun from an abandoned bag he found by the roadside while working as a truck driver in Gujarat.

Police said the woman involved in the incident is a temporary school employee and belongs to the family with whom Jayan had been living. Jayan, who lost his parents at the age of nine, was raised by the woman’s family and shared a close bond with them.

The incident was triggered after an altercation between the woman and a group of youths over picking bananas from a school premises. Police said the woman was allegedly abused and beaten multiple times.

When the youths stopped and harassed her near Bismillah Chawl in Mumbra, she called Jayan for help. Upon reaching the spot, Jayan allegedly opened fire at the group.

One person, identified as Akbar Abdul Sheikh, died in the incident. Two others, Akbar Hassan Sheikh and Sameer Ahmed, sustained injuries.

Police said Jayan was apprehended around 4 km from the spot and has been remanded in custody. A case has also been registered against the woman.

During questioning, Jayan told police that his family home is in Kollam and that he had been living in Kolkata for a long time. Investigation revealed that he is a former soldier. Police officials said the accuracy of the firing indicated professional training.

In his statement, Jayan said he opened fire when the woman, whom he considered his sister, was attacked.
