CCTV Footage Shows Suspect Entering Kolkata Hospital Before Doctor's Death
Investigators have released CCTV footage showing Sanjoy Roy, the main suspect, entering RG Kar Medical College and Hospital shortly after midnight on August 9. The footage shows Roy with a Bluetooth earphone around his neck. This evidence, along with a Bluetooth device found near the victim’s body, led to Roy's arrest. The footage also shows Roy entering the seminar hall where the victim’s body was later discovered.
Background on the Accused
Sanjoy Roy, 33, joined the Kolkata Police as a civic volunteer in 2019. He has been married at least four times and is known for his womanizing behavior. A trained boxer, Roy gained favor with senior police officers, which led to his posting at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
CCTV Evidence and Roy's Confession
The CCTV footage shows Roy entering the hospital at 1:03 am. During interrogation, police showed him this footage, and Roy admitted to the crime. The footage also shows him watching the victim and other junior doctors in the hospital's chest ward.
Timeline of the Crime
The victim went to the seminar hall at 1:00 am on August 9 to rest. A junior doctor spoke to her at 2:30 am, after which she went back to sleep. She was found dead with severe injuries the next morning.
Polygraph Tests Approved
On Friday, a special court in Kolkata approved a polygraph test for Sanjoy Roy. The court also approved similar tests for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the medical college, and four doctors who were on duty the night of the incident. Experts from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in Delhi will conduct these tests.
Ongoing Investigation and Protests
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is waiting for Roy’s DNA and psychological analysis reports to guide its investigation. On Thursday, the CBI informed the Supreme Court that local police had altered the crime scene, attempting to cover up the crime. The rape and murder of the junior doctor have led to widespread protests.

The victim’s body was discovered with severe injuries in the seminar hall on the morning of August 9. Roy was arrested the next day. On August 13, the Calcutta High Court moved the investigation from the Kolkata Police to the CBI, which started its inquiry on August 14.
