Vice Presidential Election: The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the election of the Vice President. According to the notification issued, voting for the election will be held on 9 September if needed and the result will also be released on the same day. Nominations for the post of Vice President can be filed till 21 August. The last date for withdrawal of candidates' names has been fixed as 25 August. This election has become necessary due to Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation from the post

Election Commission finalized the electoral college for the Vice Presidential election

Earlier the Election Commission of India had finalized the electoral college for the Vice Presidential election. The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college, which includes elected members of the Rajya Sabha, nominated members and elected members of the Lok Sabha. Meanwhile the EC said in a statement that it has finalized the list of the Electoral College for the 2025 vice-presidential election.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21

It said the list of the electoral college will be available for purchase at a counter set up at the Election Commission office from the date of notification, which is likely to be announced soon. Dhankhar resigned as Vice President on July 21, nearly two years before the expiry of his term. His term was till August 10, 2027.

Know the election process for Vice President post

According to clause two of Article 68 of the Constitution, an election shall be held 'as soon as may be' to fill the vacancy caused by the death, resignation or removal of the Vice President or for any other reason. The person elected to fill the vacancy shall be entitled to hold office 'for a full term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office'. A period of 30 days is prescribed from the date of issue of notification (calling the electoral college to vote) to the day of polling. Though a person cannot be elected as Vice President unless he is a citizen of India, has completed the age of 35 years and is eligible to be elected as a member of Rajya Sabha.

One seat from Basirhat in West Bengal is vacant in the 543-member Lok Sabha, while there are five vacancies in the 245-member Rajya Sabha. The Punjab seat fell vacant following the resignation of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjiv Arora after being elected to the state assembly in a by-election held last month. The effective strength of both the Houses is 782 and the winning candidate will need 391 votes, provided all eligible voters exercise their franchise. In the Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA has the support of 293 out of 542 members. The ruling coalition has the support of 129 members (effective membership number 240) in the Rajya Sabha, provided the nominated members vote in favour of the NDA candidate.

Summary

The ruling party has the support of a total of 422 members. Article 66 (1) of the Constitution of India provides that the election of the Vice-President shall be held by means of the single transferable vote in accordance with the system of proportional representation and voting in such election shall be by secret ballot. While the voter has to mark his preferences against the names of the candidates.
