Waqf Act 2025: President Droupadi Murmu signs Waqf Amendment bill into law

Waqf Act 2025: The Waqf Amendment Bill 2025 has now become a law. The bill passed by both the Houses of Parliament after two days of marathon debate was approved by President Draupadi Murmu late on Saturday night. According to a PTI report, the government said in a notification. The following Act of Parliament has received the assent of the President on 5 April 2025 and is published for general information.

The Waqf Amendment Bill, which brings changes in the functioning of Waqf Board and properties, was passed in the Rajya Sabha. It got 128 votes in its favour. At the same time, 95 votes were cast in opposition. The bill was passed after midnight after a 13-hour debate.  It was passed by 288-232 votes after 12 hours of debate in the Lok Sabha. Protests started in many places

Protests have started in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal condemning the bill. Muslim groups in Delhi also protested against the passage of the bill. However, the police have made tight security arrangements. In Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, officials have issued notices against 24 people who protested against the bill by wearing black badges. The All-India Muslim Personal Law Board has also announced that it will soon launch nationwide protests and legal action against the Waqf Bill

Waqf law challenged in Supreme Court

Opposition parties, including the Congress, had strongly criticized the Waqf Bill, calling it unconstitutional and undemocratic and argued that the government was interfering in the private matters of India's religious minorities. The Congress had also opposed the appointment of non-Muslims in the Waqf Board. At the same time, this law has also been challenged in the Supreme Court. Congress MP Mohammad Javed, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi and Aam Aadmi Party MLA have filed petitions. They have given many reasons for filing their petition. In this, they said that the Waqf Amendment Bill is discriminatory towards Muslims and is a gross violation of the fundamental rights of Muslims.
